"Oh, keep your feathers on, Opal." Kirii shot back. "It's no big deal." She and Opal were inside Kirii's garage. There were a number of smells inside the closed room, some familiar, others less so. There were also a number of jars and vials along the wall. Some of them were glowing faintly, giving evidence that they held something magical. The area was strewn with books and magazines, in total disarray. Scraps of sewing material were heaped against the wall in plastic bags. It looked less a garage and more like a storeroom. "I just think you are going a bit overboard Kirii. That's all." "Name one time I've gone overboard Opal." "Dog collar." Kirii shook her faun head, but concentrated on what was sitting on her workbench. Without turning, she replied. "Okay then. Name another. And could you hand me that screwdriver please?" Opal kept her white feathery wings tight closed, and picked up the screwdriver. She took a few steps toward Kirii, and handed it to her. "Here you go." She sighed heavily. "Looks like I'm doomed to be your partner in crime, no matter what. Guess I may as well help you." Kirii laughed at her as she took the screwdriver in her hands. "You really do worry too much." "What? Me worry?" "Yes, you worry." Kirii chuckled as she twisted the screwdriver. The bottom lid in the staff on her workbench sprung open with a snap. "Well, I have reason to worry Kirii." Opal said as she crossed her arms across her chest. "I can't believe a sweet young innocent lady like you is doing this." "Sweet young... There must not be a lot of oxygen on your world Opal. Pliers, please." "Here. And there must be a better way than this." Kirii took the pliers, and began pulling out greenish thread from the opened end of her staff. Lots of string. She pulled the material out of the staff while she spoke to her best friend. "There may be Opal. Then again, maybe not. Doesn't really matter though. I'm am going through with this. I have to. I've had enough. I hope I don't have to use it, but I'm going to have it handy just in case I do." Opal watched Kirii's modifications with interest. "You've gotten along fine without it so far." "Only because I teleport out of harms way." Kirii replied. "But running away doesn't fix the problem Opal. It just stays put, waiting for me when I return. Frankly Opal, I'm getting tired of the whole damned thing. So I'm going to put a stop to it. Cutters." Opal reached over and handed her the cutters. "Speaking of magic, just how did you get that thing to begin with? That not the type of device you and I can easily purchase, you know." There was a snap as Kirii snipped something. "I know a couple of heavy duty wizards Opal. One of them owed me a favor." "I know some heavy duty wizards too. But I've never seen one them drag something like this all the way from the lower dimensions." Kirii shrugged. "He said it was no big deal. Can you hand me a roll of that wire?" "Stainless, or aluminum?" "Stainless please." Opal walked over to the far wall, and took down a small spool of metal cable. She then walked back and set it down on Kirii's table. "Just promise me you will keep your temper when you carry that thing." she urged. "Hey, you know me." "Exactly!" Opal replied, grinning. Kirii turned for a second, stuck her tongue out at her friend, then resumed working on her staff. "Just what set you off like this in the first place Kirii?" Opal asked, scratching her head. "You've been going out to the park with me and without me for over a year now. You know what to expect." Kirii kept her gaze on her work as she threaded some wire through a hole in the base of her staff. "I got hit on again Opal. Repeatedly. By that same damned wolf as before. The lupine just won't leave me alone, no matter what." "So? That's nothing new." "That's my point Opal. Some males can't take no for an answer. Must be something in their genes." Opal nodded. "Yes, I know what you mean. Sometimes I have the same trouble, married or not. Normally I just flash my claws, and they get the hint." "Well, I don't have any claws Opal. I'm only a helpless little faun." "I believe you said something about a lack of oxygen?" Opal chuckled at her. "I can think of a lot of things to call you. But helpless isn't one of them. Especially if you start carrying that!" She ended her sentence by pointing to the odd-shaped staff Kirii was working on. Kirii snapped the lid to the bottom closed, and began to adjust something with the screwdriver. "Hopefully," Kirii said excitedly. "just having this thing around will repel some of the lowlifes." With that, Kirii set the screwdriver down, and hefted the weight of the staff against her body. Kirii pressed a button, and the staff sprung to life, whirling the stainless steel wire around so rapidly it couldn't even be seen. The only clue that the cable was there came from the airy whisper as the wire sped through the air. The garage with filled with the roar of the tiny gas-powered motor on Kirii's staff, and the air was thick with the exhaust. Opal just shook her head. Shouting above the noise, she yelled. "And what about the other lowlifes Kirii? What happens to those males who still insist on you laying down and spreading your legs for them?" Kirii smiled, and spun around with her staff. There was a loud PING as the staff swung past a broom laying against the wall. Opal watched as the bristle end of the broom fell over and laid flat on the ground. The rest of the handle fell back to earth a second later, a few feet away. Opal winced, and put her hands over her privates. "Oh, Kirii!" she cried. "I'm not even a male! And I STILL felt that! Ouch!" Kirii pressed the button once more, and the engine quickly died down. The noise in the garage vanished as her new weapon shut off. "Well Opal." Kirii said, quite pleased with herself. "Not a bad use for a weedeater, if I do say so myself. What do you think?" "I think the emergency room is going to be busy tonight." Kirii hugged the worried-looking winged feline with her free arm. "Silly kitty." She soothed. "I'm not going to hurt anybody who doesn't deserve it. I'm not looking for any trouble. But the next time somebody won't take no for an answer, I'm gonna get em where it hurts. And you know I'm only gunning for those rotten slobs who don't know when to give up." Opal was still nervous. "Knowing what kind of males I see in the park these days, you're probably gonna run out of gas." Kirii took Opal by the paw, and started to lead her through the garage door outdoors again. "I doubt it." she replied to the snowy-colored feline. "Worst case, I will have to use it one time. And if I do, every guy in the park will teleport away, clutching himself." "You sure?" "You did Opal. Well, you didn't teleport away, but you were horrified enough. And you aren't even male." "True." Kirii placed the weedeater across her back on a leather strap like a broadsword. "Like I said Opal. Worst case, I will have to use it once. Then you and I will never have to worry about any male bothering us like that again. Word will get around real quick about what happens to people who pester us." Opal wasn't convinced. But she knew Kirii well, and knew what kind of trouble the faun could get into even when she wasn't actively looking for it. There was no way Opal was going to let her go off to the park alone today. Not with that modified weedeater. Opal shook her head, and let out another resigned sigh. "Alright Kirii. Let's get this business over with. If you and I are going to jail, at least let's try to get there before dinnertime." Kirii held Opal's hand, and concentrated on calling the teleport spell to send both of them to the central park. Opal studied the wicked looking wires dangling from the machine as the air around them began to shimmer. "With your luck, you'll run into a gargoyle." Opal moaned. "He may enjoy your new toy." "Well, there is always dynamite!" Kirii laughed as the air sparkled brightly about them for a second, then stopped as the spell took them away. end
